Install and Display Classic Gnome Menu in Ubuntu

How to add classic gnome application menu in Unity Desktop - We know, Ubuntu desktop has changed the UI since for a lot over time. If you prefer to launch a cascading menu likes the original Gnome desktop environment that was previously part of Ubuntu rather than search application from Unity Dash, here's the post will tell you how to do.

ClassicMenu indicator is a notification area applet for the top panel of Ubuntu Unity that provides a simple way to get a classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu. This tools includes all application installed and structure of classic menu.

How to install ClassicMenu indicator

There's 2 ways to install ClassicMenu indicator. It's using PPA and download .deb package then install manually. Ok! Let's start the guide.

Install ClassicMenu indicator using PPA

Cause this installing via PPA so you need to add the repository containing the PPA. Open your ubuntu terminal, follow the command below :

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:diesch/testing

Type your password when the password prompted then hit enter. You need update, then install the ClassicMenu indicator. To do that in one hit, you can follow this commands :

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator

A message will displays on your terminal. It's say the dependencies, how much package will download, how much disk space will be used, and after you confirm by type 'y' when asked, installation progress displays. Once installed, search 'classicmenu indicator' from Unity and enjoy!

Install ClassicMenu indicator .deb Package

Don't want to add PPA? You can download .deb package from launchpad page. Download link is available at the last of this post. Once the download finished, install it using Ubuntu Software Center. Or using terminal :

sudo dpkg -i <package name>.deb

Change <package namewith name of ClassicMenu indicator .deb package download before.
