Change MOCP Music on Console Default Theme Permanently

MOC Player Can't Save Latest Theme Setting - For a long time I play music from linux console. It's very easy and simple. Music On Console is a lightweight music player which consists of 2 parts, a server (Moc) and a player/interface (Mocp).

Before this post, We published an article about this application. In that post we explain about how to install mocp and keyboard shortcut to control. You can read the post on How to Play Any Music on Linux Terminal.

What's MOC?

MOC (music on console) is a console audio player for LINUX/UNIX designed to be powerful and easy to use. This screenshot taken from my Elementary OS, a Linux distro Ubuntu based.

Play Music on Linux Terminal

You just need to select a file from some directory using the menu similar to Midnight Commander, and MOC will start playing all files in this directory beginning from the chosen file. There is no need to create playlists as in other players.

MOC Supported Files

MOC designed to supported file formats such as MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Musepack, Speex, WAVE (and other less popular formats supported by Sndfile), MOD, WavPack, AAC, SID, MIDI. Moreover most audio formats recognized by FFMpeg/LibAV are also supported (e.g. MP4, Opus, WMA, APE, AC3, DTS - even embedded in video files). New formats support is under development.

MOC Features

Below are lists of MOC ( Music on Console )player features :
  1. Mixer (both software and hardware) and simple equalizer
  2. Color themes
  3. Searching playlist or a directory
  4. Configurable title creation from filenames and file tags
  5. Optional character set conversion for file tags using iconv()
  6. OSS, ALSA, JACK and SNDIO output
  7. User defined keys

The binary file is called mocp due to conflict with other program present on many systems.

MOCP Theme Always Back After Exit

Ok! Just like the post title say, we will tell you to change MOCP theme. We means after closing from app and re-open we'll have the theme that we set before doesn't back to default. Follow this steps :

Step 1 - Find config.example located in /usr/share/doc/moc/examples/. The files compressed in config.example.gz. Copy anywhere you want then extract it into specific directory. Or maybe you can copy this config :

Open your favorite text editor, paste and save in home/.mocp as config. Press Ctrl+h to show hidden folders on Linux.

Save Latest MOCP Theme

Step 2 - Now find theme config line. If you prefer copy and paste the config above then find this :

Theme = /usr/share/moc/themes/darkdot_theme

And this :

XTermTheme = /usr/share/moc/themes/darkdot_theme

Change the last words "darkot_theme" with theme you want. You can looks list of available skins by press "T" ( It's uppercase, not "t" ) when MOCP running. They are :
  1. darkdot_theme
  2. transparent-background
  3. moca_theme
  4. darkdot_theme
  5. green_theme
  6. red_theme
  7. Etc...

Step 3 - Now test the result. Close MOCP by pressing 'Q' on your keyboard then re-open it. And?Cheers and Enjoy!
