How to Install Audacity 2.3.3 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and 19.10 via PPA

Install Audacity on Linux

Audacity 2.3.3 comes with over 150 bug fixes and a lot of code restructuring. Refers to its official news page, here are list of improvements and bug fixes.

Improvements

  • Equalization effect now split into two effects, Filter Curve and Graphic EQ
  • Presets (using manage button) now active/working
  • Can now have two points at same frequency for steep steps

  • Removed ‘Normalize on Load’ (Normalize as needed on export, instead)

  • Crash when opening Equalization settings in a Macro
  • Crash deleting a track while in Record/Pause state
  • Crash when attempting to time shift multiple tracks
  • Tabbing between labels stopped working
  • Refusal to export some large (4GB) files on size grounds

Installing Audacity 2.3.3 on Ubuntu

There are some methods to install Audacity on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and other Ubuntu based distirubutions. They are Snap store, Flathub, PPA repository, or bulding from the source.


For Personal Package Archive, the packages are available for Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine, 19.04 Disco Dingo, and 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver.

Step 1 - Open terminal via app launcher or simply press Ctrl+Alt+T

Step 2 - Run the command below to add PPA in Ubuntu :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/audacity

Type your password (no visual feedback) and press Enter continue
